At least three injured as Tawhidi activists attack supporters of Baul singer Abul Sarkar in Manikganj (video)

Manikganj, 23 November 2025: At least three people were injured when a ‘Tawhidi Janata’ attacked supporters of Baul artist Abul Sarkar who had gathered to protest his arrest.

The incident took place this morning at the Manikganj court premises, which turned into a chase and caused tension in the local area. Witnesses alleged that the attackers beat them with sticks, rods and bare hands, and some supporters were kicked and thrown into a nearby body of water.

Abul Sarkar, also known as Maharaj Abul Sarkar, was arrested two days ago on November 4 for allegedly making controversial remarks about the relationship between Islam and creation at a cultural event in Ghior Upazila. A case of hurting religious sentiments has been filed against him on this charge, and a court has ordered his imprisonment.

His fans and supporters gathered at the court today to protest his arrest, but members of the Towhidi mob blocked their entry and attacked them. According to eyewitness accounts, at least 10-12 of those injured in the attack suffered head injuries.

When they tried to seek treatment at the hospital, the Towhidi Janata group did not allow them to enter. A video footage shows the attackers chanting slogans such as “Grab one bowl, grab it, grab it, grab it, grab it.”

In addition, Abul Sarkar’s wife fell ill and was admitted to the hospital after this incident.

Local sources said that the police initially stood by and watched the incident, although they later intervened and brought the situation under control. The attack has sparked tension in Manikganj, and locals fear that it could lead to larger clashes. Political, social and cultural activists have protested demanding the unconditional release of Abul Sarkar.

The incident has further highlighted the ongoing tension between religious sensitivity and cultural freedom in Bangladesh. No official statement has been received from the Towhidi Janata, and the police have said they are investigating. The investigation is ongoing for more details.
