Awami League Top Leaders Hold Meeting with Sheikh Hasina in Delhi

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina held a direct meeting with 21 central leaders of the party in the Indian capital Delhi.

The party confirmed this information in a post on their verified Facebook page, saying that the meeting was held on Friday night, September 18.

It is learned that the meeting began at around 9 pm yesterday. Earlier, the leaders arrived at a building in separate cars at about the same time. Some leaders of the party’s central committee and editorial board joined the meeting virtually from different countries.

Sources also confirmed that some people who are not currently in the central committee but may join the party’s central leadership in the future also attended the meeting in Delhi.

Several members of the Awami League’s central executive council have confirmed their participation in the meeting.

Various sources have claimed that the meeting will discuss the possibility of Sheikh Hasina’s daughter Saima Wazed Putul entering active politics. There are also rumors that the meeting may also consider bringing her into the senior leadership of the Awami League. However, these are claimed to be mere political rumors from various levels of the party.

Saima Wazed Putul recently resigned from her position as Regional Director for the South-East Asia Region of the World Health Organization.

Multiple sources have claimed that, in addition to Sheikh Hasina’s daughter Putul, the possibility of including two more leaders from Chittagong and Barisal divisions in the Awami League presidium is also expected to be discussed.

It is worth noting that this meeting was held in Delhi in the context of the illegal declaration of the illegal interim government in Bangladesh, which banned the activities of the Awami League and its affiliates and fraternal organizations.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina’s government was toppled by militant clashes on August 5, 2024. Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India with her younger sister Sheikh Rehana. She has been staying there ever since.

According to party sources, the issue of restructuring the Awami League is expected to be a major focus of the meeting, keeping in mind Sheikh Hasina’s stated plan to face legal proceedings upon her return to the country in December.

Sheikh Hasina had earlier said that she and other senior party leaders want to return to the country and appear in court.
