Police have arrested a former leader of Jamaat-e-Islami on charges of raping a fifth-grade student in Begumganj, Noakhali. The man, Md. Alamgir Hossain Farazi (45), was arrested from his home in Paschim Khanpur village of Sharifpur Union last night. Later, he was produced before the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, which ordered him to be sent to jail.

The arrested Alamgir Hossain is the son of the deceased Yunus Ali of Paschim Khanpur village of Sharifpur Union. He has a shop in the local market. Local sources say that he used to sweep the streets along with selling Kabiraji medicines. Party sources said that until 2022, he served as the Baitul Maal editor, secretary and president of Jamaat in Ward No. 4 of Sharifpur Union.

According to police and case sources, the fifth-grade student went to Alamgir’s shop on the evening of September 13 with a headache. She was allegedly taken inside the shop and raped, saying she would sweep the floor. The case also mentions that the child was threatened with death if she told anyone about the matter.

Later, when the child felt unwell, he informed his family about the matter. His father then filed a case with Begumganj Model Police Station. Following the case, the police conducted a raid and arrested Alamgir from his house last night.

Begumganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamsuzzaman said, “The incident took place on September 13. The child’s father filed a case with the police station. Alamgir was arrested after the case was filed.”

Sharifpur Union Jamaat Secretary Mozammel Hossain said, ‘Until 2022, Alamgir served in various positions in Ward No. 4 of Jamaat. Currently, he is inactive and not involved in any party activities.’

Police said Alamgir was shown arrested and sent to the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court. General Registration Officer (GRO) of the court’s Begumganj Court, Md. Saiful Islam, said he was produced before Senior Judicial Magistrate Afsana Islam Rumi’s court at noon. After the hearing, the court ordered him to be sent to jail.

The GRO also said that after the child’s physical examination, his statement is scheduled to be recorded under Section 22 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the same court.
