After the fall of the Awami League government, the administration led by Muhammad Yunus began renaming entities associated with the Liberation War, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and national leaders. Discussions arose regarding whether the name of the Mujibnagar government would also be changed. Subsequently, the government decided not to alter the name of this wartime administration.
On Thursday (April 17) at dawn, Liberation War Advisor Faruq-e-Azam commented on this matter at the Mujibnagar Memorial.
He stated that the government has no intention of changing the name of the Mujibnagar government, emphasizing, “History cannot be erased. History must be preserved in its rightful place.”
The advisor added, “When the Mujibnagar government was formed, it was a temporary expatriate government. Later, it was named the Mujibnagar government. This is a factual part of our history.
“No alterations can be imposed on history. History remains history. The oath-taking of this government is a glorious chapter in our nation’s history, and it should forever be remembered with respect and love.”
Regarding the vandalism of Liberation War-related sculptures at the Mujibnagar mango grove, he said, “I will inspect the entire site. Initiatives will be taken promptly to restore the sculptures. However, the installations will be based on historical authenticity. Nothing false will be imposed here, nor will true history be erased.”
The advisor reiterated, “When the Mujibnagar government was formed, it was a temporary expatriate government. Later, it was named the Mujibnagar government. This is a factual part of our history.
“No alterations can be imposed on history. History remains history. The oath-taking of this government is a glorious chapter in our nation’s history, and it should forever be remembered with respect and love.”
He added that initiatives will soon be undertaken to reconstruct the sculptures based on historical facts.
At the same event, the Liberation War advisor hoisted the national flag, accompanied by the national anthem, paid homage at the memorial, and observed a guard of honor.
Following this, the advisor toured various locations within the Mujibnagar Memorial Complex and mango grove.
Among others present were Liberation War Affairs Secretary Ishrat Jahan Chowdhury, Khulna Divisional Additional Commissioner Hossain Shawkat, Meherpur Deputy Commissioner Sifat Mehnaz, and Superintendent of Police Maksuda Akhtar Khanam. Officials of the administration and freedom fighters were also in attendance.
Earlier, the advisor presented gifts and crests to two surviving Ansar members, Siraj Uddin and Azim Uddin, who had participated in the guard of honor on April 17, 1971.
