A worshipper was stabbed to death following an argument over holding Eid congregation prayers at an Eidgah in a village of Hobiganj. The incident occurred on Friday night, March 28, in front of the West Para Jame Mosque in Sadarghat village under Nabiganj upazila.
The deceased, Abdul Qaiyum (50), was the son of late Abdul Majid from South Para Sadarghat village in Debpara union of Nabiganj upazila.
Police and eyewitnesses said that most residents of South Para and West Para in Sadarghat village traditionally perform Eid prayers at the Syed Ali Eidgah in South Para Sadarghat. Recently, a dispute arose over holding Eid prayers at the Eidgah due to complications regarding the Waqf documents of the land. This led to tensions between residents of West Para and others.
On Friday night, after Tarawih prayers, people from both South Para and West Para gathered at the West Para Jame Mosque to discuss holding the Eid-ul-Fitr congregation at the Eidgah. The discussion turned into heated arguments. As the worshippers were leaving the mosque afterward, Mojahid Mia, son of Kazi Sundar Ali of the same village, allegedly stabbed Abdul Qaiyum.
Critically injured, Qaiyum was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Shah Riaz Nadir Suman, chairman of Debpara Union Parishad, said, “Abdul Qaiyum, a devout and pious man, was killed in a stabbing over the dispute regarding Eid prayers.”
Nabiganj Police Station OC Kamal Hossain said, “Preliminary reports suggest a man was stabbed to death following a discussion on Eid prayers in Sadarghat village. We are at the scene and will take legal action after investigation.”
