Bangladesh’s journey in Tri-Nation One-Day Cricket began with the ‘President’s Cup’ in Kenya in 1997. It has since participated in 13 tournaments in this type of competition. However, the success has been limited. In this long period, the Tigers have won only one title, in 2019.

A detailed outline of Bangladesh’s performance in the tri-series is outlined below:

  • First Tri-Series (1997): Bangladesh participated for the first time in the tri-series held in Kenya in 1997. They lost all four matches against hosts Kenya and Zimbabwe and were eliminated before the final.

  • Only title win (2019): Bangladesh won the first and only tri-nation series title on Irish soil in 2019. The Tigers defeated the West Indies by 5 wickets in the final under rain rules (Duckworth-Lewis method).

  • Losing in the final at home: Despite reaching the final of two tri-nation series at home in 2009 and 2018, Bangladesh lost to Sri Lanka both times. In 2009, Bangladesh lost by 2 wickets and in 2018, Bangladesh lost by 79 runs.

  • Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe is Bangladesh’s most familiar opponent in the tri-nation series. The red-green representatives have played against them in all four editions – 1997, 1999, 2009 and 2018.

  • The exceptional tri-series of 2007: Bangladesh won both matches against Canada and Bermuda in the tri-series hosted by the West Indies. However, no title was decided as there was no final match in the tournament.

  • Some memorable moments: Although the overall statistics are grim, Bangladesh has had several historic moments in the tri-series. The red-greens registered their first win in ODI history by defeating Kenya in the ‘Coca-Cola Triangular Series’ in India in 1998. The historic win over superpower Australia in the ‘NatWest Series’ in Cardiff, England in 2005 is one of the greatest achievements in the country’s cricket history. The final of that tournament ended in a tie, so the trophy was shared between England and Australia.
