Labour Unrest Grinds Bangladesh’s Main Export Sector to a Halt, Garment Industry Faces Major Crisis

The country’s main export sector, the ready-made garment industry, is facing a major and serious threat to production and export activities due to worker dissatisfaction. Numerous factories have completely shut down due to protests demanding wage increases, attacks and vandalism on factories, and road blockades.

As a result, there has been severe uncertainty about the timely shipment of goods to foreign buyers.

Yesterday, incidents of chaos and tension occurred in various industrial areas of Fatulla in Narayanganj, Hemayetpur in Savar, and Gazipur.

In the emerging situation, industrialists have expressed extreme concern and said that if this chaos is not stopped quickly and the workers do not return to work and the production activities of the factories do not return to normal, the impact will not only be limited to the financial losses of the factories concerned; rather, it will create long-term and severe pressure on the country’s overall export trade, foreign exchange reserves, and the entire economy.

Due to this ongoing instability, the ready-made garment industry has reached the brink of a deep abyss. Along with the garment sector, the backward linkages and other industrial sectors associated with it are also being affected equally. If it is not possible to supply products on time, the image of the country’s garment industry in the international market will be tarnished and there is a risk of losing a large number of customers in the long run.

Industry insiders said that there is now a major concern about the safety of factories and the lives and property of entrepreneurs. If such vandalism and chaos continue inside and outside factories, ordinary and peace-loving workers will also suffer from insecurity, which is a serious threat to the overall industrial environment.

According to experts, a specific and acceptable solution needs to be found quickly through immediate and effective discussions between factory owners, worker representatives, and government policymakers to resolve the emerging crisis. Otherwise, the garment sector, the main driving force of the country’s economy, may face long-term stagnation.
