Martyrs’ Families Express Grief: ‘Dr. Yunus Has No Time for Us, Where Do We Go?’

Families of martyrs voiced their long-standing grievances and frustrations during a press conference held in front of the National Press Club on Saturday, Feb. 1. They criticized the government and relevant authorities for ignoring their demands for justice and recognition for those killed in political violence.

Mohammad Rabiul Awal, brother of Imam Hasan Taaim, a victim of the July uprising, said they had approached Dr. Muhammad Yunus for support but were told he had no time to meet them. “We went to Dr. Yunus with a plea for help, but his assistant, Shabbir Bhai, informed us that Dr. Yunus had no time to meet the families of martyrs,” Awal said.

Awal added that they had been promised a meeting by Jan. 30, but later received a message stating Dr. Yunus was unavailable. “Where are we supposed to go? We seek justice and recognition for our loved ones,” he said.

The families said they have been running from office to office for the past six months, demanding justice for the killings. They also referenced the International Crimes Tribunal, which questioned why only 35 suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings. “If we face harassment while seeking justice, where do we turn? How will we get justice if the government ignores us?” Awal asked.

The families emphasized that Bangladesh gained renewed independence through the sacrifices of 2,000 children. “Unity, reform, and elections are important, but first, we need recognition for the martyrs and justice for each killing,” they said.

They criticized the construction of memorials without acknowledging the martyrs, calling it meaningless. “Demanding justice leads to harassment at every step. Our demand is clear: justice first, then reform and elections,” they said.

The families warned that if their demands for justice and recognition are not met, they will be forced to launch stronger protests. Their press conference has sparked discussions in social and political circles, raising questions about the government’s commitment to addressing their grievances.
