Just two days after the Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP convening committee was declared dissolved, Noman Hossain, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the capital’s Rupnagar Police Station, has created an unprecedented incident.
While still in government service, he posted a post on his Facebook ID demanding that former Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP convener Md. Aminul Haque be reinstated to the same position. Many have called this post ‘oil-burning’.
In addition, netizens are also seeing the fact that the OC is a staunch supporter of BNP as an attempt to gain political advantage by ‘pointing the finger at’ the ruling government and administration.
Earlier, on September 30, the 51-member convening committee of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP was dissolved through a press release signed by BNP’s joint office secretary Muhammad Munir Hossain. Md. Aminul Haque was the convener of the dissolved committee and Md. Mostafa Zaman was the member secretary.
Just two days after the committee was dissolved, Rupnagar Police Station OC Noman Hossain posted a lengthy status on his personal Facebook handle praising the former BNP leader. He described Aminul Haque as an ‘honest, ethical, idealistic and philanthropic person’ and wrote, “The desire of all the people of Dhaka Metropolitan North – there is no alternative to Aminul Haque.”
He mentioned that Aminul Haque worked tirelessly for the workers until 5-6 am after completing his government duties.
At the end of the status, the OC wrote, “All the people of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP want to see Aminul Haque Sir as the president again.” At the same time, he expressed his best wishes to the people of Bhola district.
When the OC’s post spread instantly on social media, it sparked a strong reaction among ordinary citizens and political analysts.
According to government service rules, a responsible government official or member of the law enforcement force cannot publicly express an opinion on the internal decisions or positions of a particular political party.
In the comment box of the post, many criticized the OC for his extreme unprofessionalism and demanded strict departmental action against him. However, some supporters also commented in favor of the post.
Despite repeated attempts to contact Rupnagar Police Station OC Noman Hossain on his mobile phone to find out why he, from a government position, gave his opinion on the formation of a party’s district/metropolitan committee, he did not answer the call.
Strong criticism has also begun in administrative circles regarding the police officer’s display of political loyalty and public posting, breaking the tradition of law enforcement agencies.
