Popular journalist Anis Alamgir faces threats from Dr. Yunus’s press minister Golam Mortoza

Swiss journalist Charlotte Jacquemart has accused journalist Anis Alamgir of threatening to investigate Golam Mortoza, the designated Press Minister of Dr. Yunus’ interim government.

Dr. Yunus appointed the threat maker Golam Mortoza as the Press Minister of the Bangladesh Embassy in the United States soon after he assumed power.

Charlotte Jacquemart wrote in her Facebook post, “On the one hand, Yunus and his associates talk big about democracy and human rights in the name of ‘New Bangladesh’, but in reality, they are suppressing freedom of expression.”

In the post, he mentioned that Golam Mortoza from the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington threatened journalist Anis Alamgir, saying that an investigation would be launched against Yunus if he criticized the government.

It is worth mentioning that Anis Alamgir is a senior journalist in Bangladesh. He has been working in print and electronic media for more than three decades. He was the only journalist in Bangladesh to report directly from the battlefield during the Afghan War (2001) and the Iraq War (2003). He has served as the CEO and editor of Mohana TV, editor of the daily Manabkantha, and as the news chief of several television stations.

He has also taught in the journalism department at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Daffodil International University.

He has been active in human rights, rule of law, and anti-violence positions since the change of government on August 5 last year. Some YouTubers based abroad—Pinaki Bhattacharya (Paris) and Ilyas Hossain (New York)—have recently been threatening to kill him and demanding that Yunus’ government arrest him.

They allege that Anis Alamgir is a supporter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Charlotte Jacquemart also wrote, “The Yunus government has already arrested and harassed many journalists, such as Farzana Rupa and Shakil Ahmed. Now Anis Alamgir is being targeted on that list.”

Despite all kinds of threats, Anis Alamgir has said that he will not leave the country. He will continue to speak out for democracy, accountability, and freedom of expression.

Currently, Anis Alamgir is one of the most talked about journalists in the country. He regularly participates in various talk shows and expresses his views on his own YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Swiss journalist Charlotte Jacquemart has called on the international community to “stand by Anis Alamgir, and tell the world how the Yunus government is violating press freedom one after another.”
