The investigation into the murder of Jubo Dal activist Md. Yusuf Ali in Kafrul, a town in the capital, has revealed information about a conflict of dominance and economic interests between the leaders of the volunteer party.
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) says that Hafizur Rahman Hafiz alias CNG Hafiz, joint convener of Kafrul Thana Volunteer Party, hired a hired killer for Tk 2.5 million in a plan to kill Jubo Dal leader Hafizul Islam Babu.
Although the main target of the attack was Babu, Yusuf Ali, a Jubo Dal activist, was killed in the shooting.
Officials involved in the investigation said that the murder was planned due to a long-standing dispute over garbage tenders, sidewalk control and dominance in the area. The name of Hafizur Rahman Hafiz alias CNG Hafiz, joint convener of Kafrul Thana Volunteer Party, has emerged as the main planner in this incident.
Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Md. Shafiqul Islam gave this information at a briefing organized at the DMP Media Center on Monday, July 27.
He said, the investigation revealed that the main target of the murder was Hafizul Islam Babu, member secretary of the Kafrul Thana Jubo Dal. It is alleged that a professional killer was hired to kill him under a contract worth Tk 2.5 million.
According to DB information, on June 29, Hasan, Ziyarul, Chanchal, Jihad and some hired gunmen came to Dhaka and met with CNG Hafiz. First, they stayed at a hotel in Mirpur-10 area. Later, they went to Hafiz’s garage and collected two pistols through his manager Nahid.
However, the plan was canceled when the weapon suddenly went off. Later, after identifying the target, they left the area with an advance payment of Tk 50,000.
The investigation also revealed that on July 22, they returned to Dhaka on the same instructions and took up residence in a hotel in Mirpur-2 area. The next evening, after a meeting in the garage, two loaded pistols were handed over to Ziarul and Chanchal. After that, they took up residence in front of Hafizul Islam Babu’s office and prepared for the attack.
At that time, two people named Shafin and Ali Hossain assisted in observing the scene, confirming the escape route, and informing the police of their movements, according to the DB.
According to the police, on the night of the incident, Babu was standing with the leaders and activists in front of the office. He saw some suspicious people there and asked to identify them and tried to search them.
At that time, an attacker pulled out a pistol and fired, hitting Jubo Dal activist Yusuf Ali in the chest. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
DB officials said that according to the information obtained during the investigation, it is not a political rival who was behind the assassination attempt; rather, it is alleged that internal dominance, tender control, and conflict of economic interests within the same political circle were at work.
However, the final truth regarding these allegations will be determined in the court’s judicial process.
It is worth noting that Yusuf Ali was killed in random gunfire during an attack on Jubo Dal leader Hafizul Islam Babu in front of a tea shop adjacent to Opex Garments in Mirpur-13 area on Friday night.
Two others were injured in the same incident. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police is currently investigating the case.
