Police have recovered a powerful time bomb and two petrol-filled bottles from the Akharabari premises of Baul emperor Fakir Lalon Shah in Chhauria, Kumarkhali, Kushtia. The bomb was later defused. Security has been beefed up at the shrine and surrounding areas following the incident.

On Monday (October 19), Kushtia District Police Spokesperson Additional Superintendent of Police Faisal Mahmud said that a major disaster was averted as the bomb was detected and defused in time. Law enforcement agencies are investigating who placed the explosive there and for what purpose.

According to police and local sources, a suspicious object wrapped in a white bag was found at the base of a coconut tree, about 10 feet away from the police box at the entrance of the Akhrabari at around 2 am on Sunday (October 18). Local saints and fakirs informed the police about the matter. On receiving the information, the police went to the spot and took precautionary measures.

Fearing that the suspicious bag might contain explosives, the sadhus and fakirs inside the Akhrabari were evacuated to a safe place at night. For security reasons, the main entrance to the shrine was closed and the area was evacuated. Later, the police bomb disposal team in Dhaka was informed.

On Monday morning, members of the bomb disposal team reached the spot and examined the bag. A time bomb and two bottles filled with petrol were found in it. The bomb contained gunpowder, electronic circuits, batteries and other equipment, police said. The bomb was later defused.

Additional Superintendent of Police Faisal Mahmud said, “The bomb was powerful. After it was defused, a search was conducted in the entire fair premises. At the same time, overall security has been strengthened in the shrine and surrounding areas. The situation is currently under control.”

Meanwhile, Lalon devotee Fakir Debrah Jannat has expressed concern over the bomb recovery incident from the Akhrabari premises. He said that they left Lalon Sai’s shrine on Sunday evening and went to Dhaka. On Monday morning, they received news of the bomb recovery from the shrine premises.

He said that such incidents may have been carried out to create panic at the event. He said that only those who do not love people and do not want the welfare of Bangladesh can do such things.

After the incident, the entry of saints, devotees and general visitors to the Akharabari premises has been restricted. Additional police have been deployed there. Investigations are underway to identify the people involved in storing the recovered explosives. However, it has not been confirmed yet who is involved in the incident or what their motives are.
