Pro-Shibir DUCSU Member Sarbamitra Chakma Threatens to ‘Break the Legs’ of Dhaka University Students

Sarbamitra Chakma, a member of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), supported by Islami Chhatra Shibir, has been accused of threatening to ‘kill and break the students’.

On Tuesday (October 28) afternoon, Abir Hasan, a candidate for the position of member of the independent student unity panel led by Umama Fatima in the DUCSU elections, complained in a status posted on his verified Facebook page that he made this threat to students at the proctor’s office of Sarvamitra Chakma University.

In the status, Abir wrote, ‘Let me give you an interesting piece of information. That day, when my phone was checked in the proctor’s office and I was sitting there, the leftists were marching with the hawkers. At that time, Sarvamitra Chakma entered the room from somewhere and said, ‘Just give me permission sir, I will take 10 Polapaans from Halpara and beat them up and break their legs.’

He further wrote, ‘I wanted to ask, younger brother, which hall is yours? If you can, bring two Polapanas from your hall, let’s see.’

Sarvamitra Chakma was called several times to inquire about this matter. However, he did not answer the phone. Later, The Daily Campus’ DU correspondent went to the DUCSU building to take his statement, but he was not found there either.

Earlier, there was a heated debate over the eviction of illegal shops and mobile hawkers on the DU campus. DUCSU Social Service Secretary AB Zubair and member Sarvamitra Chakma led the eviction drive with the help of the university’s proctorial team. On the other hand, leaders and activists of leftist student organizations took out a procession along with the hawkers to protest the eviction.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many questioning the legitimacy of DUCSU members’ ‘moral policing’ and their administrative role.

On Monday afternoon, Abir Hassan also filed a complaint against the university proctor’s office for violating personal privacy by checking mobile phones. He said in writing that such behavior of the administration is against the fundamental rights of students.
