After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, many cases were filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, including murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping. Later, during the investigation of some cases, major discrepancies were found between the events written in the complaint and the information found. In no case was the person mentioned as dead found alive, and in no case could the existence of the alleged dead person be confirmed. Again, although there were allegations of death by gunfire, no signs of injury were found in the autopsy. In one case, the investigation officer identified the medical documents provided in support of the claim of nine gunshot wounds as fake.

After investigating some cases, the police have recommended the acquittal of the accused, including Sheikh Hasina, calling them ‘false’ or ‘fabricated’. In some other cases, evidence of incidents was found, but the location of the incident, the identity of the plaintiff, or the involvement of specific accused could not be confirmed. In those cases too, final reports have been submitted to the court.

Claim of being shot, investigation finds no evidence of injury

Such inconsistencies were found in the investigation of an attempt to murder case by Mohammadpur Police Station recently. A man named Nur Hossain alleged that he was shot nine times in the Mayur Villa area near Mohammadpur bus stand during the August 4, 2024 movement.

According to his claim, he was shot six times in the back, two times above the left knee, and one time next to the right knee.

He filed a case against 76 people, including Sheikh Hasina, on this allegation on December 1, 2024.

The investigation did not find evidence to support Nur Hossain’s claim of being injured. Instead, the investigation officer found that the medical documents related to the case in the name of Bangladesh Medical College Hospital were not provided by that hospital.

Investigation revealed that a cash memo number on the papers belonged to another 54-year-old patient, while the ID number used belonged to another 32-year-old patient. Nur Hossain’s name was not found in the official July-Ahatdar gazette either.

SI Ukyamong Rakhine submitted the final report to the court on September 29, 2026. It recommended the release of 84 people, including Sheikh Hasina.

The report said that the allegations in the case were “primarily proven to be false” after considering the investigation, evidence, and surrounding circumstances.

Wife murder case, no trace of wife or death

A man named Suman filed a case on February 14, 2025, claiming that his wife Fatema was shot dead during a protest in Mohammadpur on August 4, 2024. 84 people, including Sheikh Hasina, were named as accused in that case.

The police investigation found no hospital records, death certificates or burial records to support the alleged murder. There was also no information about Fatima’s burial at the cemetery where she was allegedly buried.

The investigation report states that the plaintiff told the police that he did not personally know the woman named Fatima and did not know anything about her death.

According to the report, Suman filed the case under financial inducement and pressure from some people. Later, realizing the importance of the matter, he tried to withdraw from the case.

The investigation officer submitted a final report on April 27, 2026, stating that the entire incident was fabricated and recommended the release of 84 people, including Sheikh Hasina. It also recommended taking action against the plaintiff for making false allegations.

‘Murdered’ child tells court he is alive

The Keraniganj child jihad incident has been highlighted as one of the clearest examples of a fake or factually untrue case.

Zahirul Islam Raju alleged that his 11-year-old son Jihad was shot on August 5, 2024, and died on September 3. A murder case was filed against 123 people, including Sheikh Hasina, in this incident. However, the investigation revealed that Jihad did not die.

Jihad was shot and wounded. Later, he gave a statement in court, confirming that he was alive and wounded.

The investigation also revealed that although the alleged location of the incident was Keraniganj, the incident took place in the area under the jurisdiction of Hazaribagh police station in Dhaka. The death certificate that was mentioned in support of the allegations was also not found to be authentic.

The investigation officer’s report said that Jihad’s father was influenced in the hope of getting a rehabilitation house and financial assistance. The report also mentioned that a vested interest group had presented the injured Jihad as ‘killed’ in the case.

The police submitted the final report on August 11, 2025. The court accepted it and acquitted the accused, including Sheikh Hasina.

Death alleged in shooting, no injury marks found on body

The incident of Ripon Fakir in Bogra has also raised questions about the credibility of the multiple cases filed against Sheikh Hasina.

The case, filed on September 17, 2024, alleged that Ripon Fakir was shot dead while participating in a protest march in the Jhautala area of Bogra on August 4. More than a hundred people, including Sheikh Hasina, were directly accused; in total, several hundred people were named in the case.

After the case was filed, Ripon’s wife and brother told the media that he did not die from the gunshot.

According to their statement, Ripon died after getting bread stuck in his throat while eating. The two men made them sign some papers, promising family support, government assistance, and recognition as a ‘martyr’.

On November 24, 2024, 112 days after his death, Ripon’s body was exhumed from the grave and an autopsy was performed, as ordered by the court.

The investigation report states that the March 20, 2025 report of the forensic department of Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital found no signs of injury on Ripon’s body.

After the investigation, including the testimony of 22 people, the police submitted a final report, which recommended the acquittal of 104 accused, including Sheikh Hasina.

‘Killed’ Babu is alive, working in Saudi Arabia

Another case filed by Hatirjheel Police Station in Dhaka claimed that 46-year-old Md. Babu was killed in police firing on Ulan Road on July 19, 2024. Sheikh Hasina, leaders of various levels of the Awami League, and former police officers were named as accused in the case.

The police went to Chandpur to investigate based on the address on the national identity card. There they learned that the alleged deceased was not dead. His real name is Md. Shakil; he is alive and working in Saudi Arabia. Shakil also confirmed to the media that he is alive.

The investigation also found discrepancies regarding the identity of the alleged plaintiff in the case, Md. Ismail. Another person was found by contacting the phone number given in the complaint. Later, when the real Ismail was identified, he told the court that he did not file the case; someone else had used his identity.

The death certificate linked to the case was also identified as fake. After verifying the official July death list, the location of the incident, medical information, and testimony, investigators found no evidence of the death of anyone named Babu.

The investigating officer called the case ‘false’ and recommended the acquittal of the accused.

PBI finds no evidence of alleged victim

In another case in Paltan, it was said that 24-year-old Parvez Ali was shot dead on Box Culvert Road on July 19, 2024. The case was investigated by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).

The PBI has not found any evidence to confirm the existence of the alleged deceased Parvez Ali during the investigation.

The location information of some of the accused’s mobile phones was also checked. The investigation report said that there was no evidence that they were present at the scene at the time mentioned in the complaint.

The deceased and the plaintiff—neither of whom could be identified

In a case filed by Adabor Police Station, it was alleged that on July 19, 2024, a man named Ali Mia was shot dead by police and Awami League leaders and activists. Md. Toha Khan was named as the plaintiff in the case.

The police found no evidence to support the charges. The name, identity and address of the alleged deceased were incomplete and contradictory. The plaintiff could not be traced either. The mobile phone number he provided was not working; no one by that name could be found at the address.

In the end, the investigation officer submitted a final report to the court, stating that the incident was ‘not true’.

Cases filed in different places over same death

Not all inconsistencies mean that no deaths occurred. In some cases, individuals did die, but later separate cases found major discrepancies in the locations of the incidents and the involvement of the accused.

The investigators, after investigating three cases filed at Bhatara Police Station in connection with the deaths of Jahangir, Zakir Hossain and Ramzan Mia, recommended the release of a total of 494 people, including Sheikh Hasina.

The investigation found that the case or complaint filed by the families of the deceased had mentioned the incident location as one place. However, later, in separate cases filed by others, the same death incident was mentioned as being in the Bhatara area.

In the case filed by Zakir Hossain’s mother, the incident took place in Dakshin Donia, Kadamtali. In another case, it is claimed that he died in a landslide.

In the Jahangir incident, the investigating officer found out that the actual incident took place in Ullapara, Sirajganj. Due to these factual discrepancies and lack of evidence against specific accused, the investigators recommended acquittal in the final report.

Separate case filed by a person outside the family

An investigative report published in 2025 also revealed inconsistent information surrounding Obaidul Haque’s death.

According to the family, Obaidul was shot dead in Jatrabari on August 5. But another person named Md. Ali filed a separate case claiming that Obaidul had died the day before—August 4. About 200 people, including Sheikh Hasina, were named as accused in that case.

Later, Obaidul’s wife Maryam herself filed a case for her husband’s murder. She alleged that Ali was not a member of their family and had filed a false case to extort money.

When the police contacted the phone number provided in the case, the person on the other end denied filing the case.

PBI investigation also uncovers multiple fake cases

Such inconsistencies were not limited to cases in which Sheikh Hasina was accused. According to PBI data published in 2026, out of 195 CR cases filed in courts related to July, at least 14 of the investigated cases were identified as fake. No evidence was found to support the allegations in another 10 cases.

In one case, a person was claimed to have been shot, but the PBI investigation found that the person was actually injured in a road accident. In another murder case, a person who was reported dead was found alive.

According to the PBI, out of the 113 cases that have been investigated, evidence has been found in at least one charge in 89. A total of 6,844 people were charged in these cases; of them, evidence has been found against 1,343.

July fake injury, fraudster caught trying to stage a drama

Sheikh Hasina and Awami League’s statements

The Awami League has been objecting to the large number of cases filed against Sheikh Hasina since the fall of the government. The party says that cases are being filed against Sheikh Hasina and Awami League leaders and activists using allegations of murder and other crimes for political purposes.

Sheikh Hasina has also described the trial against her as politically motivated in interviews with various international media outlets.

In an interview with NDTV this year, he said that if a case is filed against a citizen or political leader, the trial must be conducted through an independent, impartial, and legal process.

He also alleged that justice is not possible based on politically-driven tribunals, fabricated cases, and intimidation of testimonies.

In a written interview with Reuters, Sheikh Hasina called the trial against her for crimes against humanity a politically motivated farce.

He claims that the court where the trial is underway has already decided to convict him and has not given him a proper opportunity to defend himself.

Earlier, in an interview with the BBC in 2025, Sheikh Hasina denied allegations of crimes against humanity during the July Movement. She referred to the tribunal as a ‘kangaroo court’ controlled by political opponents and also rejected allegations that she was being blamed for the July killings.

Human rights organizations’ concerns over mass cases

Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported in a 2025 report that 92,486 people were charged in various cases in Bangladesh between August 6 and September 25, 2024. Most of these cases were murder-related.

The organization reviewed eight reports related to the July-August killings. Each case named a maximum of 297 people, as well as hundreds of unidentified individuals.

Five plaintiffs who spoke to HRW said they did not know who they were accusing when they filed the lawsuit. They said they were asked to sign the papers by local politicians or police.

Some plaintiffs were also given the impression that they needed to file a lawsuit to obtain government recognition, compensation, or rehabilitation for their deceased relatives as martyrs of the movement. HRW identified such mass trials and the trend of anonymous defendants as worrying for the judicial process.

Transparency International Bangladesh’s (TIB) 18-month evaluation report also highlighted various inconsistencies in the cases.

According to TIB data, a total of 663 cases were filed against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, including 453 murder cases. The report also cited allegations of arbitrarily accusing many people in cases related to the July Movement, cases based on past enmity and political disputes, and arrests for the purpose of extortion and harassment.

The TIB has observed that the basis of many cases has been weakened due to indiscriminate prosecution and the inability to file charges based on specific crimes.

Allegations of extortion surrounding the case

The then Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner also used the case to accuse him of extortion.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Sajjat Ali publicly stated in December 2024 that plaintiffs in some cases filed after August 5 are calling the defendants and demanding money. He said that they are also being assured of dropping their names from the case or withdrawing the case if they pay.

He described such activities as a form of extortion. Allegations of the involvement of some policemen also surfaced in his statement.
