The nature of crime in the country has changed. While rape was the leading crime in recent months, kidnapping became the biggest concern in March. According to sources at the police headquarters, a total of 83 people were kidnapped across the country in March, with a large ransom demanded in each case. This means that on average, more than two people were kidnapped every day. A particular cause for concern is that among the victims are foreign nationals, which is considered a serious threat to the country’s international image.
The police reported that a case was filed for each kidnapping incident. However, the rising number of kidnappings has increased public concern. According to sources, the victims include women, children, and men. The reasons behind the kidnappings have been identified as ransom demands, personal enmity, and human trafficking. It is especially feared that the kidnapping of foreign nationals may negatively impact the country’s tourism and investment sectors.
A resident of Kathalbagan shared that they built their house in 2019 and had never been victims of extortion before. After August of this year, however, they started facing pressure for extortion. They were forced to pay 1.2 million taka. After some time, things were quiet. Last month, the family’s school-going child was kidnapped, and another 2 million taka was demanded. After reporting to the police and no effective progress, the family had to settle the matter themselves by paying 1 million taka to release their child. Many such incidents have occurred that are not recorded in the police complaints.
A senior officer from the police headquarters stated that a special team has been formed to investigate the kidnapping cases. Several victims have already been rescued and suspects arrested in some incidents. However, the use of modern technology by criminals and the activities of organized gangs are complicating the investigation.
Crime analysts believe that the rise in kidnappings may reflect social instability and economic inequality. A professor from the Department of Criminology at Dhaka University, who chose to remain anonymous, said, “The increase in kidnappings is not just a law and order issue; it signals deeper social and economic problems. Addressing this requires integrated measures.”
Outraged citizens have raised questions on social media about the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies. Many believe that strict legal measures and enhanced intelligence efforts are needed to combat crime. While the government has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, sources from the Ministry of Home Affairs have indicated that special instructions have been issued to prevent kidnappings.
The kidnapping of foreign nationals is tarnishing the country’s image. Diplomatic sources have revealed that several countries have issued travel advisories for their citizens to Bangladesh. This could have a negative impact on the tourism industry and foreign investment.
Experts believe that, to curb the rise in kidnappings, there needs to be a focus not only on law enforcement but also on social awareness and economic stability. To ensure public safety and restore the country’s image, the government must take swift and effective action.
