Salahuddin Ammar, former general secretary (GS) of Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union , has said that if the student union elections are not held, past irregularities including terrorist activities, encroachment and seat trading will return to the campuses.

The armed leader made the remarks at a press conference organized at Rajshahi University’s Paribahan Market today, Sunday, November 1, at 4:30 pm.

At this time, he said, not only Raksu, but also the student council elections of universities across the country are on the verge of being stalled again. The picture of the JAKSU Election Commission office is an example of this. Even the chairs and tables of the Election Commission office are being removed to make an office for the university’s journalists and teachers’ association. We do not want to see such a miserable condition of the student councils.

He said, “If the preparations for the Raksur are not made by November 10, we will quickly go hardline. I do not have my own banner or political organization. Therefore, in the continuation of the nine-point demands that we worked on, I am once again returning to the ‘Rabi Sanskar Andolan’ platform.”

Ammar also said, “Various students in the political circles are saying that this Raksu is a failure. We want you to want a successful Raksu from your place. Get it and have a successful Raksu from your place.”

Armed Raksu leader Ammar’s mob violence increases the power of the secret organization Shibir on campus

December 29, 2025

Salahuddin Ammar, a violent cadre of the Islamic Studies Department of Rajshahi University’s student secret organization camp, has become reckless on the campus. He has created terror on the campus through harassment, torture and mobs of teachers. He has also threatened BNP and Chhatra Dal teachers for speaking out in favor of them.

According to campus sources, Amma’s secret organization is associated with various militant organizations as well as Shibir. Many believe that he also has some of the weapons looted from the police station during the movement to overthrow the Awami League government on August 5. Many pictures of Amma holding weapons have already been spread on social media. Amma is desperate to take control of the campus by the secret organization, alleges ordinary students.

Students have alleged that Ammar has become reckless since he was elected as the General Secretary (GS) of the University Central Students’ Union (RACSU) in October this year. Various quarters related to the university claim that he has faced criticism every day for his extra-judicial activities, harassment of teachers, officials and employees, and controversial statements.

According to university officials, Ammar is going beyond her responsibilities as GS of Raksur and creating unnecessary controversies on various issues. Her behavior and actions are tarnishing the image of the university and disrupting the normal learning environment. Students have also become hostages to her.

Ammar’s remarks sparked fresh controversy during a protest march demanding justice for the killing of Inqilab Manch convener Sharif Osman Hadi on December 19. Protests erupted across the country.

At that rally, he said, “If there is any teacher, official or employee at Rajshahi University who is supported by Awami fascism, they will be dragged by the collar and tied up in front of the administrative building from next Sunday.” After this statement, the pro-BNP teachers’ organization and the RU branch of Chhatra Dal issued separate statements condemning it.

The most controversial issue was the forced resignation of six deans. In the dean elections held on December 17, 2023, candidates from the pro-Awami League panel were elected to six positions and their terms ended on December 17. The Vice-Chancellor ordered them to remain in office until new elections are held as per the university rules.

However, on December 18, GS Ammar set a deadline, demanding the ‘resignation of Awami League deans and removal of teachers associated with fascism’. On December 21, he posted on Facebook, writing, ‘Today from 10:30 am, I will go to six Awami League deans one by one to collect their resignations.’

That day, he himself wrote a letter of resignation and went to the Deans Complex. Unable to find the deans, he called them one by one in front of the media and later locked the deans’ chambers, as well as the offices of the vice-chancellor, deputy vice-chancellor, proctor and registrar, with the same demand. After a day of tension, the administration held a meeting with the deans in the evening and relieved them of their duties.

Apart from this, Ammar is also accused of various activities, including going around various departments looking for pro-Awami League teachers, and creating terror on campus with a stick in his hand in the name of conducting an anti-drug campaign.

University sources said that during a confrontation between teachers, officials, employees and students over the pet quota issue in admissions last September, there was an altercation with Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Main Uddin. At that time, Salahuddin Ammar was also accused of leading the incident of pushing him away.

According to the RACSU constitution, the responsibilities of the student council are mainly limited to social and cultural activities, publications, humanitarian services, debates and study groups, sports events, and participation in inter-university activities. According to former RACSU representatives, the activities of the current GS do not fall within these responsibilities.

Former VP of Raksu and central leader of CPB, Ragib Ahsan Munna, said, “The university administration has the authority to take action against teachers or officials. Threatening, locking doors or humiliating is arbitrary behavior, which is beyond the power of Raksu. This is what Ammar is doing. He is constantly being indecent.”

Many teachers and students at the university have complained that Ammar is more interested in keeping himself in the spotlight than working for the interests of students. The criticism has intensified recently when a video of him lecturing with Registrar Professor Iftekharul Alam Masud went viral on social media.

A student of the economics department of RU, on condition of anonymity, said that the university is a place of study. But here, academic administration and Raksu have all become part of national politics. The university cannot run like this. Ammar wants to take control of everything. She wants to show strength if necessary. Many ordinary students are scared of her behavior. Many are angry.

Sultan Ahmed Rahi, president of the RU branch of Chhatra Dal, said, “Fascism must be judged according to the law. Nothing can be done in a mob-like or terrorist manner. Many teachers are afraid to take classes, which is very worrying.”

Meanwhile, pro-BNP teachers’ organizations have accused teachers of harassment and insults on campus and demanded that the safety of teachers be ensured.

Professor Jahangir Hossain, general secretary of the RU branch of the University Teachers Association of Bangladesh (UTAB), said that as a Raksu representative, Ammar’s language and behavior should have been more decent and responsible. There may be protests, but the recent actions are tarnishing the image of the university.

Abdullah Al Mamun, a professor at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, said, “Ammar’s statement reflects the statement of a specific organization. There will be ideology, but it is worrying if an unusual situation is created from a responsible position.”

University Proctor Professor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman said, “If a teacher commits a crime, there is a chance to take action according to the law. No one can force someone to resign at will.”

When asked about the allegations, Raksur GS Salahuddin Ammar said that he is working in the interest of students and most students support his activities.

“I may not be able to get the certificate in the end, but I will continue to work for the students,” he said.

Yesterday, the University Teachers Network issued a statement condemning the extrajudicial actions of elected student representatives of various universities. It highlighted the forced resignation of six deans at RU and the harassment of teachers.

Dr. Kazi Maruful Islam, a founding member of the University Teachers Network and a professor at Dhaka University, said that demanding the resignation of teachers and using foul language is an extreme insult to the teacher-student relationship. Such behavior is a bad sign for the educational environment.
