The 70th men’s Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held tonight at the prestigious London Palladium in London. Bayern Munich star Harry Kane is leading the race to become the first English footballer since Michael Owen in 2001 to win the award. On the other hand, Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal is dreaming of becoming the youngest Ballon d’Or winner in history at the age of 19. He is in fierce competition with Real Madrid’s French star Kylian Mbappe.

Three stars in statistics

The performance of the last season (August 3, 2025 – July 19, 2026) is being taken into consideration in this year’s evaluation:

  • Harry Kane: Won the Bundesliga and German Cup with Bayern Munich. He also helped Bayern reach the semi-finals of the Champions League and won a bronze medal in the third-place play-off for England at the World Cup.

  • Lamine Yamal: Won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona. He also played a key role in helping Spain win the World Cup in the summer.

  • Kylian Mbappe: Despite a trophyless season for Real Madrid and France, he has enriched his goal tally with individual talent.

Scholarly Opinion and Cain’s Statement

Most analysts, including Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, are now putting Harry Kane ahead in the race to win the trophy.

“It would be incredible and special if we could win it ,” Kane said of the potential win. “But we’ll have to wait and see what the outcome is. It’s a big night, but I’m not getting too carried away right now.”
