Six children died due to a gas leak from an air conditioner in the neonatal ward of Ad-Din Hospital in the capital’s Moghbazar. Relatives and the general public have expressed deep shock and anger over the incident.
Police and hospital sources said that sometime on Tuesday night, there was an AC gas leak in the neonatal ward. The children were exposed to the toxic gas while they were sleeping. Despite prompt treatment, the condition of six of them was critical and they died one by one. Some of the other children have been shifted to another hospital for better treatment.
The hospital authorities initially said that the children suffered from asphyxia due to a leak of the AC’s refrigerant gas (possibly Freon or a similar substance) and a decrease in oxygen levels. However, an investigation committee has been formed to investigate the detailed cause.
This hospital, run by the Ad-Din Foundation, is known for providing affordable medical services to poor and middle-class families. Such negligence in such an institution has shocked many. Relatives broke down in tears.
The father of one of the children expressed his anger, saying, “We admitted the child to the hospital in trust, but his life was lost there.”
Officials from the Department of Health have visited the scene. The investigation will look into the maintenance of the hospital’s AC system, security measures, and staff precautions, it said.
Such incidents have once again highlighted the importance of regular maintenance and strict adherence to safety protocols in hospitals. Experts say regular checks of AC systems and the use of gas leak detectors are essential in sensitive areas like neonatal wards.
There have been demands for a national investigation into the incident and appropriate action against those responsible. Various social and political organizations have called for support for the grieving families.
In a statement, the Ad-Din Hospital authorities expressed deep sorrow, expressed condolences to the bereaved family, and assured full cooperation in the investigation.
The need to strengthen security measures in all hospitals in the country is now clear to prevent such tragic incidents from happening again.
