39 Police Inspectors Promoted to Assistant Superintendent: Transition From Non-Armed to Cadre Posts

39 officers working as inspectors in the unarmed wing of Bangladesh Police have been promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). With this promotion, they have become part of the BCS police cadre.

A notification in this regard was issued by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday, September 22. It was signed by Deputy Secretary Toushif Ahmed on the orders of the President.

The notification said that the promoted officers will submit their joining letters to the Senior Secretary (Public Security Division), Ministry of Home Affairs through the appropriate authority. This order has been issued in public interest and will come into effect immediately.

The notification said that these 39 officers had been performing their duties efficiently in unarmed positions for a long time. Most of them are between 45-50 years of age and have worked as inspectors in various districts and police stations. After the promotion, they will now serve as cadre ASPs at the police station and upazila levels.

This promotion is one-third of the total ASP posts in the police force, which are filled through the promotion of inspectors.

As per Bangladesh Police rules, two-thirds of the total ASP posts are recruited directly through BPSC (Bangladesh Public Service Commission) and the remaining one-third are filled through promotion of inspectors. In this process, the unarmed branch officers work in general duties, such as office administration, investigation support and logistics. After promotion, they will be transferred to armed posts and play an active role at the police station-circle level.

Police Association General Secretary Mazharul Islam said, “This promotion will boost the morale of junior officers in the police force. However, due to the long-standing promotion crisis, many inspectors are waiting. We have demanded more regular promotions from the government.”

According to the Police Headquarters, out of the total cadre positions, there are 1,231 ASP positions, which have not yet been filled.
