Sunamganj Sadar Upazila Chhatra League Organizing Secretary Dewan Shahnewaz Chowdhury Prince has been accused of physical torture in police custody after his arrest.

The family claims that he was tortured after being arrested from his home in a healthy condition and taken to the police station. Later, when his physical condition deteriorated, the police took him to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment there in a critical condition, his family said.

After Prince was brought to the hospital, his relatives rushed there. His father broke down in tears upon seeing his son’s physical condition.

Lamenting to the police, he said, “I gave you my healthy son, why did he have to be like this?”

At this time, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Farid, the police officer who brought Prince to the hospital, was seen standing silently.

According to family and local sources, the police arrested Prince from his home in Sunamganj city at around 11:56 pm on Thursday, October 29. The family said that he was completely healthy and normal at the time of his arrest. However, his physical condition deteriorated after he was taken to the police station.

The family said that Sunamganj Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Zakaria physically tortured Prince in the name of interrogation. At one point, when he fell unconscious, the police rushed him to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.

The family alleged that Prince’s physical condition had deteriorated severely before he was taken to the hospital. After reaching the hospital, the police left him there and left. Later, relatives came to the hospital and saw his condition.

The incident has sparked outrage among Prince’s family members and local Chhatra League leaders and activists. Social media is also calling for a proper investigation into the allegations of torture in police custody and action against the accused police officer.

However, detailed information was not available on why Prince was arrested, whether there are any cases or charges against him, and what exactly happened to him at the police station.

No official statement was received from Sunamganj Sadar Police Station on this matter. It was also not possible to get the statements of the accused SI Zakaria and ASI Farid, who brought Prince to the hospital.
