Kanika Biswas, Awami League Leader and Member of Bangladesh’s First Parliament, Passes Away

Kanika Biswas, a former member of parliament in the first National Parliament of the Awami League, has passed away in Kolkata, India. She breathed her last on Wednesday night, October 29, at Manipal Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata, after a long illness due to age-related complications. She was 80 years old at the time of her death.

Kanika Biswas’s relative and doctor Dr. Subodh Biswas told the media that she had been suffering from various physical complications for a long time. She died on Wednesday night while undergoing treatment.

According to family sources, his last rites were performed at the Nimtala crematorium in Kolkata on Thursday afternoon.

Kanika Biswas was born in Orakandi, Gopalganj, Bangladesh. She was a women’s organizer and a dedicated worker of Awami League politics during the Liberation War. She was nominated as a member of parliament from women’s seat-11 in the country’s first national parliamentary election in 1973.

He actively participated in every historical chapter – the Six-Point Movement, the Language Movement, the 1954 United Front elections and the Bangladesh independence struggle. During his long political career, he worked at home and abroad to spread the progressive trend and humanitarian spirit of Awami League politics.

Kanika Biswas’s husband Biren Raj Biswas died in 1985. After that, she continued politics in Bangladesh for some time, but due to family reasons, she started living permanently in Hridoypur, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

Kanika Biswas’s death brought to an end an important chapter in Bangladesh’s politics and the progressive movement of the Liberation War. The Bangladesh Awami League will always remember her for her political and humanitarian contributions.
