Police Name Two Deceased Awami League Leaders as Accused in a Case, 12 and 4 Years After Their Deaths

One died 12 years ago, the other 4 years ago. Yet, both of them have been named as accused in the Anti-Terrorism Act case filed by the police in Jessore.

The case filed against 113 people, including the names of two deceased Awami League leaders, has raised questions about the process of preparing the list of accused.

On August 30, the case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Jessore Kotwali Police Station by SI Shafiqul Islam of the old Kasba police outpost. A total of 113 leaders and activists, including a former state minister and 5 members of parliament, have been named in the case.

The FIR names Dr. Tabibur Rahman, the president of the Suburban Union Awami League, as accused number 56. However, he died in 2022. On the other hand, accused number 77 Ansar Ali died in 2014.

The case alleges that an anti-government ‘subversive protest march’ was held in the Kazipara area of ​​Jessore town on August 28. A case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act against 113 people, including a former state minister and 5 MPs, in that incident.

However, it has been four years since the death of one of the two accused and almost 12 years since the death of the other. Now, questions have arisen about how their names appeared in the police case report.

Especially since the case was filed by the police as the plaintiff, there has also been discussion about the process of verifying and selecting the names of the accused.

When asked about the case against the deceased, Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station OC Masum Khan said, “There may be someone else with the same name. However, if the deceased’s name is included in the case, the matter will be investigated and necessary action will be taken.”
