The Daily Amar Desh newspaper published a news report with pictures of three activists of the anti-discrimination student movement (BAICHA) arrested during the ongoing student protest, claiming that they were Chhatra League ‘cadres’. However, investigations revealed that the arrested were not Chhatra League leaders and activists, but pro-government BAICHA activists.

Information found in a search by Fact Detector, an independent fact-checking organization that verifies the veracity of information.

The organization said that the claim that a person named Abu Sufian alias Sharif, among the three people arrested in the clash at the secretariat, was a Chhatra League cadre in a news published in the daily Amar Desh newspaper on July 23 is not true.

Fact Detector’s investigation revealed that Abu Sufian was directly involved in the July-August movement from the beginning, and also found evidence of his friendship with NCP leader Sarjis Alam. The other two arrested are also Abu Sufian’s associates.

Bangladesh Chhatra League has confirmed that they are not leaders or members of any unit of Chhatra League.

In addition, Amar Desh newspaper claimed in its news that the three arrested people were Chhatra League leaders, but did not mention any of their party positions. In other words, the campaign claiming that Abu Sufian and the other two were Chhatra League cadres is complete rumor and propaganda.

The FactChecker organization also attached Abu Sufian’s Facebook link to their statement: Abu Sufian alias Sharif’s Facebook profile

Incidentally, the daily Amar Desh has been criticized numerous times for spreading rumors. Especially during the trial of war criminals, it spread lies about the Razakars and spread photoshopped pictures to confuse the public. They have been serving as the propaganda cell of the war criminal party Jamaat-e-Islami for a long time.
