A mobile court has sentenced an NCP leader from Faridpur district to just six months in prison for manufacturing various products including aphrodisiacs, baby gel, and other adulterated drugs in an illegally established drug factory.
The convict, Md. Bayezid Hossain Shahed (40), is the senior joint convener of the NCP district committee. He is a resident of Alfadanga upazila but currently lives in the Goalchamot area of the city.
Mobile court judge and executive magistrate of the District Commissioner’s Office, Insana Tanzin Eko, said the sentence was imposed after a raid was conducted at NCP leader Shahed’s M/s Janata Laboratories factory in the city’s Goalchamot area on Tuesday night. He was later sent to the district jail.
The mobile court authorities said that the pharmaceutical factory had been operating illegally there since September 2022. A large quantity of adulterated Ayurvedic medicines, including baby gel and various types of aphrodisiacs, were manufactured there.
The operation was conducted on charges of violating relevant sections of the Essential Commodities Control Act. A large quantity of illegal medicines was recovered and seized from the factory during the operation.
In addition to the six-month prison sentence, Shahed was fined Tk 10,000, said Assistant Commissioner Insana Tanzin Echo.
In this regard, Saif Hasan Khan, member secretary of NCP’s Faridpur district committee, said, “We have no compromise with injustice. If any party member commits injustice, organizational action will be taken against him. The matter will be investigated and reported to the center.”
