Students Expelled for Life at SUST: Academic Careers Destroyed Over Trivial Allegations

Twenty students have been expelled for life following a harsh and inhuman decision by the university administration over an alleged attack on anti-discrimination student protesters at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). Of these, 12 have been directly accused of suppressing the protest, and another 8 have been expelled for life for merely keeping weapons in their rooms.

In addition, 17 other students have been expelled for 2 to 4 semesters. It is reported that such harsh decisions have been taken against them based on verbal complaints alone, without any irrefutable evidence.

University Proctor Professor Mukhlesur Rahman told reporters about the decision on Friday evening. However, the university administration has not yet released the full list of expelled students.

Many students view such actions by the university administration as inhumane and illegal.

Ordinary students say that these expulsions are based on frivolous and unsubstantiated allegations, through which the administration is essentially trying to silence the students. On the one hand, this has severely disrupted the students’ educational lives, and on the other hand, has created an atmosphere of fear in the university.

It is worth noting that a total of 29 students, including the president and general secretary of the Shabiprabi branch of Chhatra League, were expelled for various terms on the alleged attack on anti-discrimination student workers on January 12. And all those who have been expelled this time are said to be involved in Chhatra League politics.

However, according to many involved, these decisions were made for political reasons. They were all innocent.

The proctor also said that the 19 accused students were acquitted as the charges against them were not proven.

Analysts say that steps that destroy educational life are unacceptable for any educational institution, but rather a violation of human rights and the fundamental rights of students.
