Miraz Losing Captaincy, Litton to Take Over ODI Leadership

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to revert to a separate captaincy structure for Test and white-ball cricket (ODIs and T20Is), a recent report by Cricbuzz has revealed.

Reliable sources in the BCB said that the matter will be raised in the board meeting to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday (July 29). If the board of directors approves, current T20 captain Liton Das will take over as the ODI captain, replacing Miraz. On the other hand, Nazmul Hossain Shanto will continue as the Test captain.

• New responsibility: Tawhid Hriday, who was Liton’s deputy in T20Is, could get the same role in ODIs.

• Future Leadership: The board is considering Hridoy as a future captain after leading the team in the T20 series against Zimbabwe and Australia and playing a major role in the 2-1 series win over Zimbabwe despite losing the first match.

According to BCB sources, initially, Shanta was considered to return the ODI captaincy to him. However, the board is moving towards sharing the captaincy of two separate formats to allow Shanta to focus fully on the red-ball game and give Liton the freedom to plan the white-ball game.

Miraj’s failure and past context

Mehedi Hasan Miraz took over from Shanta on June 12, 2025. His tenure was even extended till the 2027 ODI World Cup in April this year. But under him, the Bangladesh team won only 2 out of 13 ODIs abroad, which failed to meet the board’s expectations.

Earlier in 2022, there were three different captains – Shakib Al Hasan (Test), Tamim Iqbal (ODI) and Mahmudullah (T20). Later, the experiment of having three different captains in all three formats began, and now the country’s cricket is going to return to a new chapter with two different captaincies for the red and white balls.
