Debashish, Son of Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Appointed Permanent Judge

Additional Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court has been appointed as a permanent judge. The President, in consultation with the Chief Justice, appointed him as a judge of the High Court Division in accordance with Article 95 of the Constitution.

The Law and Justice Department issued a notification in this regard on Monday. According to the notification, the appointment of Debashish Roy Chowdhury as a permanent judge will be effective from the date of his swearing-in. However, the date of the swearing-in has not been announced yet.

Debashish Roy Chowdhury is the son of Nitai Roy Chowdhury, the current Minister of Cultural Affairs. The Supreme Court website also lists Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury as the name of Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury’s father.

Earlier, on October 8, 2024, 23 people, including Debashish Roy Chowdhury, were appointed as additional judges of the High Court Division. Of them, 22 were appointed as permanent judges in November 2025, but Debashish Roy Chowdhury did not become permanent at that time.

According to the Supreme Court administration, he had not yet completed 45 years of age at that time. Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury was born on March 1, 1981. As a result, he completed 45 years of age on February 28, 2026. After fulfilling the age requirement, he was appointed as a permanent judge.
