In an interview with BBC Bangla, the Bangladesh Awami League strongly condemned and protested the unreasonable, incoherent, baseless and fabricated statements made by BNP acting chairman and fugitive convict Tarique Rahman in London.

In a press release sent to the media, the party said that Tarique Rahman’s comments were made with the intention of destabilizing the political environment in Bangladesh, inciting intolerance, and disrupting the country’s healthy democratic process.

The statement said, “Tareq Rahman’s statement proves that he is completely disconnected from the reality and people of Bangladesh. His statement has no vision for building a future Bangladesh; rather, it is a failed attempt to legitimize the looting system through which BNP has conducted politics in the past.”

The Awami League noted that a leader convicted by the court in murder, corruption, looting and money laundering cases can never contribute to the welfare of the country and the nation.

The statement said, “The way BNP leaders and activists have engaged in politics of murder, rape, looting, extortion and occupation in the past year proves that they have taken the form of one of the world’s most terrorist and extortionist groups. Tarique Rahman is their leader and he continues to provide shelter to these criminals.”

The statement further said, “Tarique Rahman has no moral right to comment on the politics of the Bangladesh Awami League and People’s Leader Sheikh Hasina, because the main goal of Awami League politics is public welfare, while BNP politics is a symbol of taking away people’s rights.”

The party alleged that BNP has repeatedly been deprived of the people’s verdict by engaging in conspiracy politics, while the Awami League has gained the people’s trust due to its public welfare-oriented politics.

The statement said, “Understanding that the people will vote in favor of the Awami League and Sheikh Hasina if they can vote fearlessly, the BNP and its allies are conspiring to hold elections without the Awami League.”

The Awami League insists that the future of Bangladesh will be determined by the verdict of the people of the country – not by the influence of any foreign power or undemocratic conspiracy.

Finally, the party appealed to the countrymen, “Do not be misled by false propaganda, stay united, inspired by the spirit of the Liberation War, and play a role in the country’s development, progress, and continuity of democracy.”
