Despite winning the T20 series, Bangladesh is struggling in the ODIs. Mehedi Hasan Miraz’s team was completely ignored by Afghanistan in the first ODI of the series.
Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 4 wickets in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday night. Electing to bat first, Bangladesh scored 221 runs on the fifties of Miraj and Towhid Hridoy, but the Afghans crossed that mark with 17 balls to spare to win.
Afghan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai was named man of the match with 3 wickets for 40 runs in bowling and 40 runs off 44 balls with the bat.
Chasing runs, Afghanistan put on 52 runs through the opening pair. After losing two wickets in quick succession, they turned things around with fifties from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah. Even after these two departed, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Omarzai made it easy for them to win.
On the other hand, Bangladesh took the lead in batting, losing three wickets early on. Later, Miraj and Hridoy put on a 107-run partnership. Except for Miraj’s 60 and Hridoy’s 56, no one else scored any significant runs.
With this win, the Afghans took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second match of the series will be played on Saturday.
