India Condemns Demolition of ‘Historic’ Mujib’s House at Dhanmondi 32

India has expressed deep concern over the demolition of the Dhanmondi 32 residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding father. Referring to the house as a “historic building,” India highlighted its symbolic significance as a beacon of resistance against oppression and occupation in Bangladesh.

In an official statement on Thursday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the event as “deeply distressing,” noting, “For India, this house is an inseparable part of Bangladesh’s liberation struggle and national identity. It stood as a symbol of courageous resistance, which has now been destroyed.”

Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi government also expressed concern over the incident but stopped short of issuing a strong condemnation.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a speech to her party members, underscored the historical importance of the residence. “It was from this house that Bangabandhu declared the call for independence. It was here that he was brutally assassinated,” she said.

India’s government strongly criticized the demolition, stating, “Anyone who values Bangladesh’s liberation war, identity, and pride understands the immense importance of this house. This act of destruction must be unequivocally condemned.”

The incident has sparked widespread reactions within Bangladesh’s civil society and the international community, with ongoing discussions about its implications for the country’s national heritage.
