Joint forces have arrested three leaders and activists along with a sharp Chinese axe and domestic weapons from the car used by Meherpur district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Taj Uddin Khan.
They were arrested at around 11 am today, Monday, January 26, at the Hotel Bazar intersection in the city.
The detainees are: Izarul Haque, son of microbus driver Sohel Rana of Monakhali village, former Shibir activist, Saharul Islam, son of Sabdar Ali of Kamdebpur village, Jamaat activist (admin of Jamaat Amir Taj Uddin’s Facebook page), and Shibir leader Selim Reza, son of Rabiul Islam of Khoksa village.
Police said they were released after initial verification.
Meherpur Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector BM Rana said that all vehicles were being checked as part of the regular checking at the joint force check post. At that time, when a white-colored Noah (Dhaka Metro Ch 19-4146) was checked, 3 foldable sticks, a foreign axe, an electric teaser, a multi-tools kit, a pliers, 3 walkie-talkies, 4 chargers and a megaphone were recovered from inside the vehicle.
Later, the seized weapons and microbus were seized in the presence of the executive magistrate, said BM Rana.
Meanwhile, the district Jamaat held a press conference in protest of the incident in the evening.
At a press conference, District Jamaat Secretary Iqbal Hossain claimed that Amir’s driver was on his way to the rally by picking up a journalist and another person in his car. At that time, the army detained them.
Claiming that the equipment in the car was for self-defense, he said that the police released them and the car because they were not considered weapons. He also accused some media outlets of exaggerating the incident.
